Garden Angels

The Garden Angels are a group of people interested in keeping the church property in good shape, specializing in landscaping. We have at the present time 15 men and 3 women.  We meet every Thursday morning at 7:30 a.m. for breakfast at the church (free of charge).  On the 3rd Thursday, we go out for breakfast.  We do all the pruning, cutting, weed pulling and general cleaning of the church property.  We are there for fellowship and gardening. All are welcome, church members and non-church members. We have jobs for everyone.

Our Program Director is Lincoln Fujii.

SacraTomato!

Growing tomatoes is a favorite of gardeners in Sacramento. Tomatoes are easy to grow and planting a few plants will provide an abundant harvest. When you decide you want to grow tomatoes, select a site with full sun and well-drained soil. Sacramento gets fairly hot, so light afternoon shade may help prevent blossom drop. To prepare the soil, use a garden fork or tiller to loosen the soil to a depth of 12 to 15 inches. Mix in a two to four inch layer of compost.

If you don’t want to buy plants and want to start with seeds, it’s best to start the seeds indoors in flats or pots six to seven weeks before the last frost date and then transplant the plants when the soil is warm and all danger of frost has past. Set the plants in planting holes 18 to 24 inches apart and set up cages, stakes, or trellises for the crops.  After four weeks, apply a thick layer or organic mulch.  Keep the plants well watered all season.

For great flavor, harvest tomatoes when they are firm and have reached their full color.

There are hundreds of varieties to choose from.  Here are some popular varieties:
